SEO Basics for Contractors (Part 2)
October 31, 2009 – In a previous article, we had been discussing some basics of search engine optimization (SEO) as it pertains to construction companies. We left off by referring the do-it-yourself types to initially educate themselves by watching the first 7 or 10 days of Ed Dale’s free training, 30 Day Challenge. Though these videos are thick with information, they are brief and fairly entertaining, and should serve as a good orientation to the world of Internet promotion. If you understand the concepts in this training, you will be light-years ahead of the average person with a contractors license.
It is important to note, there are two main fields of Internet promotion. Search engine optimization (SEO) pertains to programming and content which exists on your actual webpage. The other sector is search engine marketing (SEM) which is a blanket term to describe all of the offsite things you might do which make your site more attractive to search engines.
So, after you have watched some 30 Day Challenge videos, you should select two or three keyword phrases which you are trying to become relevant for, and which you are going to target in your SEO and SEM efforts. The videos will show you software which will help you with your research of keyword phrases and Google also offers free research tools, but in general, you are looking for phrases which get searched regularly, but which don’t have many websites competing for them. I.e. jobtrio.com targets the term “construction industry” because the ratio of searches vs. competitors is about ten times more than a phrase like “construction contractors”.
As an example, say your business is Jim’s Plumbing and you are located in Omaha, Nebraska. You should select keyword phrases which accurately define your company, but which are neither too broad (i.e. “plumbing nebraska”) or too narrow (“jim’s plumbing omaha”). However, perhaps you will find that the phrase “rooter omaha” is a good fit. Using the research tools, you will be able to find phrases which are good candidates for your business based on quantitative data.
